The War Begins
The War of 1812 had two main parts. During the first part, from 1812 to 1814, Britain was still tied up in its fight against France. Britain thus carried on only a limited war in North America. It did, however set up a blockade. The British navy blocked ships from entering o r leaving American ports. The American forces could do little at this time. The state militia served only as a defense, and the country's leadership was poor. The navy, on the other hand, gave America something to cheer about. The navy's volunteer crews were dedicated. Its officers had experience fighting the French and pirates in the Mediterranean. Its warships were the fastest afloat. The USS Constitution, the USS United States, and the USS President all had victories in the high seas.
